  17. <p>    Officials at the Hays County Jail in San Marcos, Texas, should
  18. have been suspicious when inmates bought hundreds of yards of
  19. dental floss from the prison commissary. The inmates were not
  20. concerned with dental hygiene. They braided the floss into a
  21. rope that they fashioned into a ladder with stirrups made of
  22. fabric threaded through cardboard salt and pepper shakers.
  23. Using hacksaw blades smuggled into the prison in the soles of
  24. bathing slippers, the trio managed to saw through two of three
  25. Plexiglas panels in a window of their dorm cellblock.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    After guards spotted the missing panes, the ladder was
  28. found under an inmate's mattress. Last week Arthur Harris Stier,
  29. 33; Ian James Holbs, 32; and David Gregory Surasky, 37, pleaded
  30. guilty to attempted escape. "It was ingenious," marvels
  31. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerald Carruth. "That dental floss is
  32. strong. When it's braided, it's like nylon. If they had made it
  33. through the window and up the ladder, only a mesh screen stood
  34. between them and escape."
